NTC: TEACHERS' CPD POINTS TO BE MADE EASIER - NTC EXECUTIVE SECRETARY || Check The Process

Dr. Christian Addai Poku

Pre-Tertiary Teachers of the Ghana Education Service are mandated to go through certain processes in order to renew their license within  a three-year cycle. Teachers are expected to enroll on some NTC courses such as (Demand-Driven and Supply-Driven) and Portfolio Development to acquire knowledge in order to score Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Points.

The acquisition of  these CPD points have been one of the major challenges to teachers due to the processed involved.

It is in view of all these that is why the Executive Secretary of the National Teaching Council(NTC) of Ghana, Dr. Christian Addai Poku clears the air on attending paid workshops as a teacher.

According to the NTC Executive Secretary, no Teacher Union has instructed its members not to attend Training workshops organized by Service Providers.

He noted that, NTC does not currently organize workshops by themselves, instead NTC Accredited Service Providers do so as approved by NTC. Again NTC does not have the time to organize such workshops on their own.

In clearing the air, he said teachers are not to attend more than one Training workshop which is organized by the same Service Provider per year. District Directors of Education and the District Training Officers (DTO) are also permitted to award CPD Points through In-Service Trainings (INSETS) and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) etc,

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is also permitted to award 13 Points per year by which 6 CPD Points must bee awarded freely as teachers participate on the PLC. The remaining 7 points are to be paid for but at a negotiable price. The implication of this is that the teacher is at liberty to settle for the CPD Workshop with the lowest price.

NTC has not agreed on any amount with any Service Provider on amount to charge per training, hence, the District Directors of Education to negotiate on behalf of their teachers.

As reported by the Executive Secretary of the NTC, Dr. Christian Addai Poku, NTC is ready to engage in conversation with the various Teacher Unions to make the building of points easy for the teachers without costing much.

He concluded by saying that the Subject Area Specialization Training or Workshops give more CPD Points than the general workshops.
