| Group Executive Director (Kofi Asare) |
Group Executives Director, Kofi Asare of African Education Watch (EDUWATCH) has released a statement on the recent salary negotiations Government and Labour Unions stating that, due to the economic hardship as a result of inflation, the salary of the average teacher should be increased drastically.
According to him, the number of cements the salary of a teacher could buy in January 2022 is not the same as the number it could buy in 2023.
He further indicated that, with this explanation, the average teacher’s salary should be GH¢ 3000+
“The average teacher’s net salary of GH 1,800 was worth 37 bags of cement in Jan 2022. Today, plus 15% COLA, the salary is worth 21 bags. To restore salary value to Jan 2022 level, it must increase to GH 3,552. How different is this for others?”
However, government has failed to reach a conclusion on the salary negotiation of the labour unions.
Meanwhile, government have only proposed 15% as against 60% which has been rejected by the labour unions. And as a result meeting has been adjourned indefinitely due to 2023 budget.
